ARC REVIEW: Crushed by Lauren Layne

descriptionLauren Layne’s latest novel about the healing power of redemption tells the story of a crush gone wickedly wrong, proving that what you want isn’t always what you need. Growing up in New York, Michael St. Claire never expected to spend his twenties wearing cowboy boots. But that was before he learned about his real father, a total stranger with a family in Cedar Grove, Texas. Once in the Lone Star State, Michael meets Kristin Bellamy, who is exquisitely refined and everything Michael always thought he wanted in a woman. The only problem is that Kristin is dating Michael’s new half brother, Devon. Kristin’s mouthy, curvy sister Chloe has always been in love with Devon Patterson. So when Michael offers to help Chloe break up Devon and Kristin, Chloe agrees to a deal that seems too good to be true. Before long, Chloe finally gets her man, only to make a startling discovery: She no longer wants the guy she had to fight for—she wants the one who stood by her side. After all he and Chloe have been through, Michael swears he’s damaged goods. Can Chloe convince him that love is worth the risk?

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I left my naughty read a bit to read a sweet and funny story about two people who become friends before falling in love.
As a reader, I'm happy that I'm able to read so many different types and genre and still loving them all differently ^^

Crushed is the second book I've read from Lauren Layne and I start to think she might become an auto-buy author for me. Her stories are always well written, funny, without too much drama and with characters that you can only love.
Crushed is about Chloe Bellamy and Michael St Claire.

Chloe has loved Devon, her sister's boyfriend for a long time but to her excuse, him and her were close friends for a long time before things were serious with Kristin, her sister.
The reason why it never goes farther with her is because when you have someone like Kristin, a perfect skinny beautiful girl, why would you want the chubby girl that is Chloe?

Michael has left behind a comfortable life with his parents in New York because he learned that the one he thought was his father is not. So he wants to approach his real father and for that he needs to get to Devon ( remember Kristin boyfriend?)

He quickly realize that Chloe has a thing for the guy, he also see that despite the confidence she shows, Chloe is certainly not confident with her body and as a personal trainer he can definitely help her.
From there, their relationship won't stop to grow. Chloe is a smart young lady. What she lacks in confidence with her body she counterbalance with her sassy mouth.

"Want to find out?"
"Find out what?"
"If my winking makes panting fall off"
"Don't bother. I'm not wearing any"

Michael isn't indifferent to Chloe but he can let himself and his heart be involved in any way 1) because he doesn't want to love ever again 2) because he knows Chloe doesn't see him that way.

"With Chloe, it's easy to forget that I'm nobody. Because she makes me feel like somebody"

If you've read the first book in this series, I'm sure you know who Michael and why his heart was broken but I haven't and let me tell you, that doesn't bother the least. Everything will fall into place at the right time.

What I love about this book other than to see the relation between both our MC was Chloe. She is the true star of this story. I think a lot of girls can relate to her. She is beautiful inside and she needs a little help to be a little better on the outside ( not that she need it for real

She is aware of who she is and she doesn't want to change, she doesn't want to settle for less than she deserves but she also want to be wanted by someone, to be with someone that will count for her and that she will count for too.

" I want you. And I want to be wanted. I want to be the kind of girl that guys can't help themselves around. I want to be irresistible"

The love between Michael and her is never really developed. There's always Devon presence who linger above their head, yet none of them can deny the attraction they felt.

"I want to take what he's offering, not because I actually want to kiss this gorgeous, conceited guy with secrets that make him irritable, but because I wasn't lying when I said I don't get the kissing"

I want to make something clear at this point: at no time there's question of a love triangle. Chloe is in love with Devon at first BUT there's nothing more here. The story is not about her being torn between two guys at all.
The story is a beautiful tale of hope, discovery of who you are and what you really want.
Lauren Layne offers a balance between a funny story and a story that makes you realize love may not always be what you think it is.
